2019/20 TY Scholarship

The story so far...

The Future's looking bright

The revamped scholarship program has taken its most ambitious steps to date. The program has always been about giving young people in our locality a chance to get outdoors, get active while learning new skills. This year we have cast the net wider than ever, by taking not just more TY students from more schools but also from much further afield. Finally, we are bringing the outdoors into our communities. Our scholars are working hard on inspirational Outdoor Action Projects. From inception, development, and delivery, our scholars are taking action to shape the world in which we all live, to make it better for us and the environment we all share. Watch this space, the future’s looking bright for us all.

Stalefish and Craghoppers!

This year we have accepted 26 scholars out of the 50+ applicants we received. Split into two groupings: Stalefish and Craghoppers the scholars are made up of 15 girls and 11 boys from 9 different schools:

Mount Mercy College, St Mary’s Mallow, Scoil Mhuire Kanturk, Patrician Academy Mallow, Colaiste Mhuire Buttevant, Colaiste an Chraobhin Fermoy, Scoil phobail sliabh luchra Rathmore, Colaiste an Chroi Naofa Carrig na Bhfear, St. Marys Charleville.

We start with the basics for each activity, progressing through techniques and skills to give the scholars confidence to develop passions and skills. From Kayaking, Climbing to Wakeboarding, all the associated paddle, ropes, knots and belaying skills involved are covered both in theory classes as well as practical sessions.

When we are happy that the scholars are ready, we take to the hills, crags, and waters of Munster to practice what we preach. So far we were lucky enough to work with Mags McCarthy and her team at Awesome walls on the Model Farm Rd in Cork, to get in some climbing practice on impressive indoor climbs which has been one of the highlights so far.

We have 6 dedicated instructors as well as office staff that is working with the Scholars across all aspects and disciplines. It has been a team effort but a very rewarding one. Over the past number of weeks and it has been uplifting to see the progression week on week as we get to know the scholars better and better.

Outdoor Action Project - Panel Presentations

Where ideas come to life!

It is great to see how vocal young people are about topical issues that affect the world they live in. To end 2019 and this half of the scholarship program, we wanted to come up with a way to highlight all the great work that has gone into the scholarship so far. The Stalefish and Craghoppers groups have both been working hard on Outdoor Action Projects that are designed to have community outreach and involvement. This is a self-led project where the students have come together to initiate ideas, discuss, research and develop all aspects. The outcome has been the presentation of two great and very interesting projects.

Stalefish:

  • A primary school based project around physical activity outdoors in the mornings

  • A program that includes an informational talk and delivery of a practical circuit like workshop

  • Promoting increased physical and mental health benefits along with the proven increases in concentration levels for the rest of the school day

  • As well as the school-based sessions, information leaflets and posters help bring the message home to the whole family, who are encouraged to get involved to complete the Family Outdoor Challenge as part of the project.

Crag Hoppers:

  • A project that aims to create a wild garden space within and for the community

  • A native wildflower garden that will increase biodiversity and allow native species to thrive, but will also be a space to visit and be immersed in wild outdoor spaces to increase wellbeing and health.

  • Schools children creating Fairy doors and community learning and resource signage will be developed to allow local to be involved in growing and upkeeping the garden.

Both projects passed their first hurdle this week when they were presented dragons den style to our esteemed independent panel. This was a huge learning curve for all the scholars, who did themselves proud. The panel was excited by the variety and enthusiasm brought to the table. Both projects are on the pulse of current-day topics and were endorsed for their vision. The feedback received will help the project in the next phase early next year.

If you are interested in supporting or hosting any of the above projects or would like to learn more contact the scholarships by emailing info@ballyhasslakes.ie. An exciting 2020 awaits...
